Meet Heather & Dan Porrill & Family
Heather Porrill is a country girl and very proud of it. City living is not for her. Instead, she and her family prefer the wide open fields of the local farmland and the familiar camaraderie of the small town community. While it was a job that originally brought the Porrills to Dawson Creek, it is the wonderful people and beautiful country that has made them stay.
Farming and entrepreneurialism “are in my blood,” says Heather. “I can’t imagine any other way of life now. I love doing my own thing, and when it is working right everyone benefits.” Heather and her family especially love to share their passion for farming with the children who visit. Children naturally gravitate to the animals and are quick to understand the relationship between farming and the food that they eat. Here in the Dawson Creek area, says Heather, people have access to all kinds of amazing farm products, from produce to meats. Locals, both farmers, and non-farmers seem committed to the idea of eating food grown locally. In fact, notes Heather, “I don’t think I know anyone without a garden of some sort.”
The short northern growing season means the time during the winter months for other pursuits. For Heather, it’s all about caramel. Her Buttery Bites Caramels, with their simple, wholesome ingredients, are shipped all over Canada and have become a local favorite. The rich, delicious scent has become a permanent fixture in the Porrill’s kitchen. Recently, Heather has expanded the repertoire to include fresh peanut brittle.
Rustic. Leisurely. Eclectic.
Star Bright Farm is a first generation family owned and operated farm welcoming families and children of all ages to explore what life is like on a working farm. There are animals to visit and feed and gardens to browse (you can even weed if you like!), giving guests an up-close look at farming and understanding more clearly where food comes from and how it is produced. Guests are invited to end their visit by browsing the on-site farm fabric and gift shop where you must try a sample of Star Bright Farm’s own Buttery Bites Caramels, made fresh right on the farm. Don’t forget to purchase a bag to take home with you.
Farm tours are available July and August each year by appointment. Fresh pumpkins can be purchased from Star Bright Farm’s own pumpkin patch in the fall, and a variety of fresh produce is also available for sale during the harvest season.
Mention that you saw Star Bright Farm on Love Dawson Creek and get a free llama fibre bird nest bag to hang in your yard for the birds when you book a farm tour.
